You might watch Where the Wild Things Are online and feel like you've traveled back to childhood. Children everywhere have grown up with this story, originally a book by Maurice Sendak, and now they'll have the chance to see it as a movie.
A boy name Max is the main character in the book, a boy who gets into his share of mischief. He runs from his yard, to a fence, then to a lake, then to an island where there are Wild Things, and they make Max their ruler.
If you
watch Where the Wild Things Are online, you'll see a seamless integration of live action, suitimation, animatronics, and CGI into a warm and fuzzy visual spectacle. After one particularly mischievous night, Max is sent to bed by his mother, played by Catherine Keener.
Max runs through his yard in the darkness, comes to a fence, and then a boat. He sails away into the darkness. Max eventually makes it to the island where The Wild Things are, led by Carol, who is played by James Gandolfini.
They crown Max their ruler. Also in the cast are Angus Sampson, Steve Mouzakis, Paul Dano, Chris Cooper, and Michael Berry, Jr. It was going to be made into a movie in the early 1990s, but Maurice Sendak couldn't find a director he felt was right for the project.
Later, Sendak offered the job to director Spike Jonze (of Being John Malkovich) and the two clicked.
Jonze and Dave Eggers eventually (in 2005) spun a full length screenplay out of the book which is only 10 sentences long. Sure, it may have taken the better part of two decades to be made, but watch
Where the Wild Things Are online, and you'll know it was worth the wait.
